Проводящая часть представляет собой часть электрооборудования, электроустановки здания или здания, которая способна проводить электрический ток. К проводящим частям электрооборудования и электроустановки здания относятся жилы проводов и кабелей, шины и другие проводники, а также иные проводящие части электрооборудования, например – их проводящие оболочки.
В зданиях также имеются многочисленные проводящие части, не относящиеся к их электроустановкам. Это металлические конструкции, например, балки, колонны, арматура и др., и оборудование, например, металлические трубы водопроводов, систем отопления и газопроводов, металлические газовые плиты, отопительные котлы и теплообменники и др.

К токоведущим частям относят фазные и нейтральные проводники электрических цепей переменного тока, полюсные и средние проводники электрических цепей постоянного тока, а также другие проводящие части электроустановки здания, электрически соединённые с указанными проводниками и имеющие при нормальных условиях электрический потенциал, существенно отличающийся от потенциала эталонной земли.
Защитные проводники не относят к токоведущим частям, поскольку в нормальном режиме электроустановки здания они находятся под электрическим потенциалом, практически равным потенциалу локальной земли. PEN-проводники, PEM-проводники и PEL-проводники, обычно не рассматривают в качестве токоведущих частей несмотря на то, что эти проводники выполняют функции нейтральных проводников, средних проводников и линейных проводников.
